What are porcelain crowns?
Porcelain dental crowns are a tooth-colored and tooth-shaped type of dental prostheses. Advances in the strength and appearance of porcelain crowns have made them the leading choice in restoring damaged teeth to their former splendor.
Our doctors typically recommended crowns to restore teeth that have a root canal, a crack or fracture, heavy amounts of wear from grinding, large amounts of decay, large cavity fillings, or discoloration. Teeth that are this badly damaged are likely to break from the stress of daily use and porcelain crowns provide 360 degrees of coverage to prevent this from happening. The underlying tooth needs to be prepared in order to create a surface that can support a porcelain crown, so this treatment is typically only recommended for teeth that have been extensively damaged.

What to expect - 2 appointments
First Appointment
At your appointment with us, we will administer full local anesthesia for the tooth being treated. Our doctors will prepare the tooth to create room for the porcelain crown. A digital 3D scan or impression of the prepared tooth will be taken. This scan or impression will be sent to our laboratory’s ceramist for fabrication of a porcelain crown that looks and feels like your natural tooth. A shade will also be selected for the permanent crown.
A temporary crown is created, polished and cemented. The purpose of the temporary crown is to protect you from sensitivity, shifting of teeth, and keep the gums from moving over the prepared margins of the tooth. During the next two weeks prior to porcelain crown delivery, you’ll want to avoid sticky or hard foods near the treated tooth, so the temporary crown does not dislodge. If it comes off or breaks, call our office so we can try to replace it as fast as possible.
Second Appointment
During your second visit approximately two weeks after the first, the temporary crown will be removed and the final porcelain crown will be tried in and examined for perfection. A dental cement will be applied to the internal side of the crown to seat the crown fully on the tooth. Any excess cement will be cleaned off and removed. You will be provided with any necessary instruction to take proper care of your new crown.
